Two Typical Cartridge Flow Control Valve Speed Control Circuits

In a hydraulic system, speed is determined by flow and pressure is determined by load. Cartridge flow control valve is essential to control the operating speed of the equipment. This article describes two of the most typical cartridge flow control valve.

1、Inlet throttle speed control circuit

In the case of a single rod cylinder, for example, the inlet and outlet oil flows are different due to the different area ratios of the rodless and rodded chambers.

  • Because the return oil goes back to the oil tank directly, the hydraulic cylinder works in a lower pressure state, better guarantee the service life;
  • There is no back pressure in the circuit, so the pressure fluctuation has a relatively large impact on the stability of operation, and the work is not smooth; you can increase the appropriate back pressure in the circuit through check valves or damping holes and so on;
  • When using the O-skill neutral directional valve, due to leakage, when the neutral stop, the hydraulic cylinder will occur to extend the phenomenon;
  • Throttling hot hydraulic oil into the hydraulic cylinder, resulting in component heating.

2、Return oil throttling speed control circuit

  • The return throttle circuit stabilizes the pressure in both chambers of the cylinder. This results in relatively small pressure fluctuations during operation. Consequently, the work becomes smoother.
  • When the hydraulic cylinder is in a high-pressure state, the area ratio causes the pressure in the rod chamber to rise to a high level when the load is small. The pressure can even reach multiple times the system pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the cylinder’s ability to withstand pressure. Additionally, you need to set up a safety valve in the rod chamber.
  • When an O-skill neutral directional valve is used, the hydraulic cylinder extends when the neutral stops due to leakage;
  • Hydraulic oil passes through the throttle orifice. The pressure loss converts into heat energy. The oil can then enter the tank directly for cooling.
  • When there is no back pressure downstream of the throttle port, cavitation may occur, causing abnormal noise.
